when should I stop taking the pill

when should I stop taking the pill

You can start trying to get pregnant as soon as you stop taking the pill. You might want to finish your pill packet, however, to avoid annoying midcycle bleeding. Some women are fertile the day they go off the pill, while others take a few months to start ovulating again. Youll know ovulation is back to normal if youre getting your period regularly. If its been 3 to 6 months and you still havent had a period, you should see your doctor, but dont worry this doesnt necessarily mean something is wrong. Some practitioners recommend using a barrier method and waiting until you have a couple of normal periods before trying to conceive. But theres no risk to you or your pregnancy if you conceive soon after stopping the pill. Waiting a few months until your cycle is regular also can help you establish a more accurate due date. If you do get pregnant before your periods become regular again, dont be concerned you can have an early sonogram, instead, to date your pregnancy.

If you do become pregnant while on the pill, dont worry about your baby. The chance of birth defects is virtually nonexistent.

I stopped taking the pill November 8th, started my period November 11th. I just found out Monday that I am pregnant. I was ready for a long battle with getting pregnant, my mom had problems and my husband has also had a vasectomy reversal so I thought my chances were slim. I couldnt believe it happened the first time we tried. I think I am still in shock! My doctor told me the best time to get pregnant is the first month Im off birth control and well, he was apparently right!a BabyCenter Member

the whole point of the pill is to trick your body into thinking that youre pregnant so you dont ovulate, which works most of the time thats why its not 100 percent effective. The pill is at its best effectiveness if you take it at the same time every day so that you have more consistent levels of pill hormones in your body, but again, like condoms its not 100 percent effective; however, the chances of you getting pregnant while on the pill are slim basically if your body decides to ignore the extra estrogen and progesterone in your system from the pill and ovulate anyway, so if youre trying to get pregnant just stop taking the pills after you finish your current pack. You may not be able to get pregnant for up to a month after you stop birth control.

If you arent trying to get pregnant, then just try to be consistent about the time when you take your pill, and if you want to be really careful use condoms 20 days into your cycle. If youre not monogamous, ALWAYS use condoms

Finish the pack you are on now and then stop taking them even if you arent ready to start trying to get pregnant. I stopped taking the pill in Feb. to start trying to get pregnant in May. It has now been almost 8 months since I stopped birth control and I have only had two periods. The dr. just put me on a medicine to help regulate my period. It is so heartbreaking to deal with this because I want a baby so bad. Help Center Press Center Contact Us Site Map
